I was the first person at the first convention in Seattle. I was listening to the radio in Salem when they mentioned the con happening the next day. I hopped a Greyhound and got into town around 2am. I found my way to the Seattle Center and greeted Kit Canterbuy when she and her crew showed up. I sat on the registration table next to my future wife and Trek partner.
Jimmy Doohan was the main guest and I got an awesome recording of him singing Scottish ballads. Ask about it. Free, of course.
In the early 80's my buddy, Carl Samons, borrowed my bridge blueprints and proceeded to build the navigation console and captains chair, lighted and to specs. He took the results to a convention in Seattle where George Takei sat at it and Grace Lee Whitney, in her sexy prime, posed for cheesecake photos on the console. I couldn't be there but told him he now had a 'scratch n' sniff' bridge. It wound up in my rec room after a while where we built the comm panel and I added a working Red Alert system. A friend of ours contacted the local newspaper and in August of 84' they showed up and did a story on it.
TV news saw the story and 3 Seattle stations and a Portland station did stories on us. Later, People mag did a pictorial but it never materialized .
It was a hoot while it lasted. We had a little more than out 15 minutes.
